Lohra Miller was elected Salt Lake County’s first female District Attorney November 7, 2006. The people of Salt Lake County asked DA Miller to bring the positive change she promised during her campaign for the District Attorney’s (DA’s) Office. DA Miller vowed to increase communication and coordination in the criminal justice system—improving prosecution and ultimately making our community a safer place to live and raise a family. Since taking office in January 2007, DA Miller has instituted a number of changes that have greatly improved prosecution in Salt Lake County. One of her first priorities was the creation of a team dedicated to the prosecution of domestic violence (DV) crimes. To that end, DA Miller directed the creation of a Domestic Violence Team in July 2007. Prosecutors on the DV Team specialize in the prosecution of sensitive crimes such as spousal, partner, and senior abuse. DV Team prosecutors know the challenges unique to DV prosecution and are better able to prosecute DV crimes. DA Miller has also emphasized the prosecution of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) offenses to ensure that those who put the community at risk while driving intoxicated are held accountable for their reckless actions. Under DA Miller, the DA’s Office treats DUI crimes more seriously and prosecutes offenders more aggressively.
DA Miller has stressed working closer with law enforcement and community leaders. She encourages prosecutors to become more involved in community affairs and improve prosecution by better including victims in the prosecution of complex crimes. DA Miller has also improved coordination between the agencies providing victim support. As a result, victims of crime have a better understanding of the criminal justice system, are better supported during the criminal justice process, and are better able to cope with the crime that has affected their life.
Looking to the future, DA Miller is committed to making the DA’s Office a more versatile, efficient organization. She continually improves the technology in the office to improve work product and output, constantly looks for new and innovative ways to prosecute and rehabilitate offenders, and she tirelessly works with law enforcement and the courts to ensure that the criminal justice system holds offenders accountable for threatening our community. In short, she is dedicated to improving the processes the criminal justice system uses to ensure the safety of Salt Lake County for years to come.
